In September 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 5, which requires all employers to evaluate their relationships with independent contractors.

This legislation codifies and expands upon the California Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in Dynamex Operations West, Inc. v. Superior Court where the high court adopted a new “ABC” test for determining whether workers may be classified as employees or as independent contractors under California’s wage orders.
